Virtually abandoned when the mines closed in the early 1900s today the Extension area is a small, peaceful, rural community that offers many activities in its natural setting from hiking to activities on the Nanaimo River which runs through the area. For those seeking more exhilarating outdoor adventure Wildplay Nanaimo would be the location of choice for people throughout the area, offering climbing, zip-lining, jumping, and swinging through the trees.
Due to its quiet, rural setting, area residents are accustomed to driving to Nanaimo and other neighboring communities for the host of entertainment options offered in the surrounding area from movies and plays, to sports events and bowling all available a short drive away. However, Extension does offer its own entertainment option for those seeking more exhilarating outdoor adventure such as climbing, zip-lining, jumping, and swinging through the trees at Wildplay Nanaimo located in the area.
Predominantly rural, the only restaurant option in Extension is the Timberland Pub offering traditional pub fare with traditional Indian cuisine, however, Cedar is a short drive away and is home to several food establishments while all dining options offered in Nanaimo are also easily accessible.
Though there are no designated parklands in the Extension area its rural, natural setting, rivers and small bodies of water provide a host of opportunities for those looking to enjoy what nature has to offer.
