Area Overview

Woodgrove Centre, Vancouver Island’s largest shopping mall, and many large department and box stores are located in the North end; while families are often drawn to the area because of the reputation of the schools, the numerous neighbourhood and community parks, and for access to beautiful beaches.  Many North Nanaimo homes are larger and newer, especially when compared to their South End neighbours, with the majority built after 1980, and subdivisions since 2000; and with its hillside location, ocean and coastal mountain view homes are easily found.

Schools

There are three elementary schools for students from K to Grade 7 in North Nanaimo: Frank J. Ney, McGirr, and Randerson Ridge as well as one secondary school, Dover Bay, for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

Shopping

North Nanaimo offers a multitude of shopping venues: The Woodgrove Centre is located in North Nanaimo - with 150 stores this is the Island’s largest shopping centre, in the same area you will find a number of other strip malls - Nored Plaza, Dickensen Crossing, Northridge Village and the Longwood Station shopping mall - each with a number of specialty shops and/or well-known chain stores and restaurants.

Recreational Opportunities

The moderate climate and beautiful scenery provide a great deal of incentive, if any is needed, to get outside and enjoy all that North Nanaimo has to offer.  Some of Nanaimo’s largest sandy beaches are found in this area with access gained from several places throughout the North Nanaimo coastline and often with a thick belt of forest separating them from the subdivisions above providing opportunities to stroll, explore and enjoy the water.  There are rural trails for those looking for a more rigorous walk, an abundance of play areas for children in the many neighbourhood parks,  City of Nanaimo Sports Fields for the sporting enthusiasts,  and the Oliver Woods Community Centre on the Uplands border providing access to a fitness studio, gym, and recreational programs.

Entertainment

Offering a cinema, the Landmark, a regional library, and outdoor pursuits, North Nanaimo provides many options to tick your entertainment boxes limited only by how you want to pass your time. For those who find their pleasure in a retail environment or enjoying a meal, the North end offers shoppers and diners a multitude of choices while one of North America's oldest rugby clubs, the Nanaimo Hornets, is located here and provides the opportunity to experience the game of rugby and a taste of what they describe as "Hornet Style" hospitality.

Restaurants

North Nanaimo offers a wide variety of dining venues to suit all tastes and budgets for take-out and dine-in and for those who don’t have time to leave their vehicles - from Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese restaurants, to European, traditional North American, brewpubs, all manner of fast food establishments and bakery options, you won’t go hungry for lack of choice!  Some local favourites in the area include Nori Sushi, Dover Chinese, the Longwood Brew Pub, and Bodhi’s Artisan Bakery.

Parks

The most notable parkland and trails in the area include the Lost Lake Trail and the Walley Creek Trail, both of which offer some rural respite from busy daily life.  There are numerous neighbourhood parks nestled in North Nanaimo’s subdivisions, such as the Saxer Park with 1 kilometer of walking trails, the Groveland Gyro Park, and two Fillinger Waterfront Parks,  many of these community parks provide easy access to children’s play areas, picnic tables, and small loop trails, while some provide access to the water.  Four of the City of Nanaimo Sports Fields are also located in this area:  May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park,  McGirr Sports Complex, Groveland Park,  and Harry Wipper Park - all of which are suitable for a wide range of sports.
