Education, Experience, & Early Career

Devin holds a Business degree (with distinction) and has completed the Sauder School of Business at UBC's esteemed Urban Land Economics Program (DULE), whereby he has undertaken specialized training on topics such as Real Estate Finance, Appraisal, Real Estate Investment Analysis & Advanced Income Appraisal, Real Estate Law, Residential & Commercial Property Management, among others. During his studies, Devin received numerous awards for academic achievement, most notably the Stanley W. Hamilton Award for achieving the highest overall standing in the DULE program. In addition to previously holding his securities licence, Devin attained his CIM designation through the Canadian Securities Institute, was qualified as a mortgage sub-broker, passed the provincial life insurance licensing exam, and completed a diploma in Business Administration. A sophisticated investor himself, Devin has been investing in the public markets since the age of 18 and has been a real estate investor since his early 20s. He has been a true student of real estate investing with a sizeable personal library of books on the topic; however, Devin would be quick to tell you that his knowledge gained from his personal experience as a landlord may be just as valuable as any formal education he has ever completed.

Devin grew up immersed in a growing family business on Vancouver Island, learning many valuable lessons that he has taken with him throughout his career. With some education behind him, he made a move to the financial services industry, working first as a Credit Manager responsible for writing loans and mortgages, before moving to Vancouver for the opportunity to join the Private Wealth division of a prominent Global Investment Banking firm where he worked with a high-performance team providing elite trading and venture capital services for entrepreneurs, high net worth investors and publicly traded companies. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, when the conversation turned to starting a family of his own after a number of years in the city, Devin knew Central Vancouver Island offered an unrivaled quality of family life and the decision was made to make the lifestyle move back home to Nanaimo, where he partnered with his wife Carlee in starting the Jahelka Real Estate Group.

When not immersed in his business and working for his clients, Devin can be found enjoying the Vancouver Island lifestyle with his young family. An avid outdoorsman, he particularly enjoys spending time on the water, whether it be fishing, waterskiing, scuba diving, kayaking, or cruising. And while his love for the Island is unparalleled, his passion for traveling has taken him to more than 50 countries, which has largely served as the inspiration for the Community Builders International Fund he has co-founded that focuses on a number of initiatives intended to help build sustainable communities in developing nations. Devin is also a Director of the International Widows & Orphans Fund (IWOF).
