Why You Would Want To Live in Pleasant Valley

Located in the north end of the city, Pleasant Valley is an affordable neighbour to the pricier North Nanaimo.  If you would like the benefits of living in the north end without the price tag, Pleasant Valley is an area worth exploring.   Offering great diversity in housing with new subdivisions as well as established neighbourhoods, Pleasant Valley is a popular choice for young families and retirees alike.

Area Overview

Pleasant Valley encompasses a large area up from Mostar Road in the south, from the Island Highway in the east, and Aulds Road in the North.  Though this area does include shopping and light industrial areas, the greatest part comprises picturesque green space, and many homes in the area were built to enjoy nearby Brannen Lake with its sandy beaches, swimming float, and boat launch.

Schools

There is one elementary school in Pleasant Valley, Pleasant Valley Elementary, for students from K to Grade 7.  For Grade 8 - 12,  students attend Dover Bay Secondary School located in North Nanaimo.

Shopping

Many of Pleasant Valley’s retail options are concentrated between the Island Hwy and the Nanaimo Parkway, and along Metral Drive.  Pacific Station on the Uplands border offers access to a variety of different professionals in one vibrant community, while closer to the north end, shoppers will have access to big-box retailers and specialty stores for items such as groceries and health food, clothing, musical equipment, fabric, building and gardening supplies, and office supplies.

Recreational Opportunities

Home to two lakes, Green Lake and Brannen Lake, Pleasant Valley area residents benefit from the many different water-based options they offer:  Green Lake provides a more rural experience with wharves and walkways while Brannen Lake is a favourite destination for water skiers, sea-doos, motorboats, and wakeboarders.  Also in the area are sports fields for soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Entertainment

Residents of the Pleasant Valley area are well situated to access all entertainment options offered throughout the Nanaimo area.  Neighbouring North Nanaimo, Uplands, and Diver Lake offer movies, sporting events, exhibitions, and expos while a short drive on the highway opens up entertainment options in the performing arts in the Old City, bowling in the University District, and for the more adventurous, bungy jumping in the Extension area.

Restaurants

Pleasant Valley offers several dining choices as well as easy access to all cuisine offered in all Nanaimo communities.  Milano’s Ristorante is a good choice for those looking for Italian dishes locally, while Brown’s Socialhouse is considered a “premium casual environment” where the neighbourhood pub feel meets upscale but casual dining.  Meanwhile, more ethnic tastes will be satisfied at Kasira serving authentic Thai food and at the Saigon Kitchen for traditional Vietnamese fare.

Parks

In addition to the neighbourhood parks found in the Pleasant Valley area, the Brannen Lake Beach Park is a popular destination for swimming and boating while the Pleasant Valley Park is one of the City of Nanaimo’s official sports fields providing a venue for organized and casual soccer, baseball, and basketball.
