Why You Would Want To Live in Hammond Bay

If living in a community that offers a variety of home styles and waterfront & water view properties appeals to you, Hammond Bay should top your list.

Area Overview

A more mature area than its North Nanaimo neighbour, many Hammond Bay properties are 20-30+ years old and tend to be on slightly larger lots with more established landscaping, although newer developments are springing up. It is from this area that you will find some of the best views with many homes overlooking Departure Bay and the Downtown Harbour as well as the coastal mountains and Vancouver. Though a quiet area, Hammond Bay is just minutes from shopping and amenities in both the north and south end and is also home to some of the area’s most scenic waterfront parks and trails.

Schools

There is one elementary school in the Hammond Bay area - Ecole Hammond Bay which is a single-track French immersion school for students from K to Grade 7.  For English-speaking elementary students who live in Hammond Bay, the catchment school is Departure Bay Elementary School in Departure Bay.

Grade 8 -12, French immersion students in the Hammond Bay area continue their studies at the Nanaimo District Secondary School in the University District, while students from Departure Bay Elementary go to Wellington Secondary in Departure Bay.

Shopping

Although there are no retail stores in Hammond Bay itself, residents in this area are only minutes away from all amenities in North Nanaimo, Departure Bay, and Uplands.  For those relying on public transportation to reach these destinations, Hammond Bay Road - which runs from Departure Bay through Hammond Bay and into North Nanaimo - provides regular transit service with multiple bus stops.

Recreational Opportunities

Home to two of Nanaimo’s most scenic coastal parks as well as providing access to a network of trails, it is no surprise that area residents and those from other communities enjoy life outdoors in Hammond Bay with walking and hiking trails for all abilities and fitness levels, scenic viewpoints, beach access for on and offshore activities, a boat ramp, and scenic shore access dive sites suited to all skill levels; and for those who prefer indoor fitness, there is also a fitness centre in this area.

Entertainment

Residents of Hammond Bay are fortunate to have easy access to some of Mother Nature's finest oceanfront and all that offers recreationally, however, all other forms of entertainment found throughout the Nanaimo area - from movies in neighbouring North Nanaimo and Uplands; to plays, festivals, museums and galleries in the Old City, and bowling in Central Nanaimo or the University District - are just a short drive away.

Restaurants

While there are no restaurants located in Hammond Bay, the recently re-opened Pipers Pub lies on the Hammond Bay - North Nanaimo border with all other North Nanaimo and Departure Bay restaurant options just a short distance away

Parks

Pipers Lagoon and Neck Point Park both located in Hammond Bay, are two of Nanaimo’s most popular and scenic parks with beautiful views, walking trails and picnic spots, swimming, boating, and shore access diving appropriate for all skill levels. The Linley Valley (Cottle Lake) Park can also be accessed from Hammond Bay, a forested wilderness park that includes groomed trails and maintained boardwalks, while the small wooded area with a trail system known as Planta Park is in the Stephenson Point neighbourhood of Hammond Bay and offers trails, viewpoints, and beach access.
