Schools

There are two elementary schools in Chase River for students from K to Grade 7: Cinnabar Valley Elementary and Chase River Elementary. Students in Grade 8-12 attend Cedar Secondary school in Cedar.

Though a short drive from Nanaimo’s amenities, the Southgate Shopping Centre located in Chase River would meet the daily needs of most Chase River residents offering a grocery store, post office, bakery, coffee shops, pharmacies, a gas station, liquor store, and a home & garden store while a big box building supply store is across the street in the Cedar area.

There are several community parks in the Chase River neighbourhood many offering children’s playgrounds, picnic spots, and sports facilities however it is also an area known for its waterways:  The Chase River Estuary Park (on the border of Cedar and Chase River) offers over 1 km of trails and boardwalks with views of the tidal mouth of the Chase River and bird watching opportunities.  The Richard’s Creek and Wetlands, a creek over 2 km in length that widens into an expansive wetland through the Cinnabar Valley, is a popular trail and bird watching destination as the creek empties into the Nanaimo River Estuary - the largest estuary on Vancouver Island and home to over 238 bird species.
