Area Overview

As its name suggests, Central Nanaimo is centrally located and is within walking distance to coffee shops, stores, banks, and restaurants and is also where the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is located.  An established, stable and safe community developed in the 1980s, there is a good mixture of affordable single-family homes, condos & townhouses with new developments emerging in response to demands for affordable housing in the area.

Schools

There are three elementary schools in Central Nanaimo for students from K to Grade 7: Brechin Elementary and Forest Park as well as Quarterway which offers early and late French immersion. All Grade 8 -12 students in the Central Nanaimo area go to the Nanaimo District Secondary School located in the University District.

Shopping

The Central Nanaimo area is home to a variety of industrial, commercial, service, and retail businesses serving the community’s residents and Nanaimo as a whole from grocery stores to breweries, industrial plastics & paints to flooring, and from dance studios to fitness centres.  And with its proximity to the highway, amenities in other areas of the community are just a short drive away.

Recreational Opportunities

Residents of Central Nanaimo are well situated for easy access to the recreational activities and opportunities found in all Nanaimo communities although local area residents will find a full array of activities and facilities on their doorsteps from all manner of sports including a 9 hole golf course (Pryde Vista), trails for cyclists and walkers, community gardens, picnic spots, a water park feature and even a scenic waterfall and fish ladder.

Entertainment

Conveniently located in between both highways and therefore close to all communities within the Nanaimo area, Central Nanaimo offers a host of recreational opportunities and access to many other entertainment options from bowling at Brechin Lanes in Central Nanaimo, catching a Hornet's rugby game in North Nanaimo, ziplining at the WildPlay Element Parks in the Extension area or experiencing what life was like for the area's earliest settlers at the Nanaimo Museum in the Old City.

Parks

There are several neighbourhood parks throughout the Central Nanaimo area but located within the heart of the community is the 36 hectare Bowen Park offering a host of facilities for outdoor swimming in the summer months, curling, lacrosse, disc golf, tennis, horseshoe pitches, sand volleyball, and lawn bowling in addition to two playgrounds, trails, and gardens including a 350 species rhododendron grove. Also in the area, Beaufort Park offers tennis courts, walking & cycle trails, and a partially fenced off-leash area for dogs.
