Why You Would Want To Live in Brechin Hill

If you are looking for a well-established community, the charming Brechin Hill area may be a good fit for you.

Area Overview

Centrally located close to shopping at the Terminal Park mall with a variety of retailers to meet your daily needs and not far from the downtown core, many Brechin Hill residents enjoy being able to leave the car at home preferring instead to walk.  Residences in the area tend to be older, character homes although newer builds are starting to emerge; many of these properties have views of Departure Bay and the harbour and over to Newcastle Island.

Schools

There is one elementary school in Brechin Hill - Ecole Oceane, however, English speaking K - Grade 7 students would enroll in either Brechin Elementary in Central Nanaimo or Cilaire Elementary in Departure Bay depending on their Brechin Hill address.

For Grade 8 -12, French immersion students in the Brechin Hill area continue their studies at the Nanaimo District Secondary School in the University District, along with students from Brechin Elementary, while Cilaire feeds into Wellington Secondary located in Departure Bay.

Shopping

Brechin Hill’s Terminal Park strip mall and surrounding retail area is a popular one-stop shopping destination with award-winning specialty stores (seafood, bread, deli meats, and health food) as well as a dollar store, a liquor store, a post office, banking & insurance centres,  a  barber’s shop, restaurants, fast food options, and a gas station.

Recreational Opportunities

For those who enjoy walking, Brechin Hill offers many opportunities.  One end of the approximately 4km ocean-side walk known as the Harbourfront Walkway is located in the Brechin Hill area offering the opportunity to stroll or bike to the heart of the harbour front and on to the downtown core, or to sit alongside and enjoy the comings and goings in the inner harbour area.  There are also parks and sports fields in the area and for those looking to enjoy the water, the Brechin Hill boat launch is located beside the BC Ferries terminal.

Entertainment

Conveniently located along the waterfront and bordering the Old City, many Brechin Hill residents are well within walking distance of the many entertainment options Nanaimo offers and only a short drive away from everything offered within the entire area. From energy-releasing family-friendly options such as bowling at Brechin Lanes in Central Nanaimo, and play areas at Diver Lake's and Beban Park to more cultural experiences found in the theatre and in exhibitions and galleries located in the Old City, there are entertainment options for all ages and all tastes.

Restaurants

The Brechin Hill area with its views of the marina and Newcastle Island is home to two waterside pubs, Carlos O’Bryan’s Neighbourhood Pub and the Millers Pub, and a seaside bar and grill, Beefeaters Chop House & Grill. Meanwhile, the Terminal Avenue Plaza offers several fast food options for pizza, burgers, and sandwiches as well as options for sushi at nearby Nemo Sushi To Go and a blend of Mediterranean cuisine, steak, seafood, and Asian dishes at the Zougla Restaurant.

Parks

The Brechin Hill neighbourhood offers several parks and recreational spots for area residents and visitors alike:  The Barney Moriez Park, one of the City’s official sports fields, is located in Brechin Hill.  A one-acre neighbourhood park, it is used in the most part for soccer and baseball, but there is also playground equipment for children, including slides that many consider the “best slides in town”.  The St.George Ravine Park includes an open grass area with a trail and an off-leash area for dogs. Another great attraction in the Brechin Hill area is the Chinese Memorial Gardens Park.  Dedicated to the early Chinese pioneers, the Park offers a picturesque garden setting with views of the Newcastle Channel.
